Even though the reviews in the papers were bad, how could I not watch this movie, especially since it’s touted as the last episode. My curiosity was piqued by the question of who An Zhen will eventually pick, ex-husband Rui Fan or Lan Tian Wei. Huh? Wasn’t this obvious in the last TV episode? Apparently not.
The movie starts four years later. An Zhen is a career woman working in Hyatt Hotel and a single mother looking after her 9-year-old daughter, Momo. Tian Wei is still the executive at Volk Wagon who sends postcards to her from wherever he is. Rui Fan is launching a German cosmetic brand and is finally returning to Taipei.
Momo wants the parents to reconcile and is hostile towards Rui Fan‘s courtship of her mother. An Zhen is still traumatized by her marriage breakdown and hesitates to take the next step with Tian Wei, preferring to maintain a platonic friendship. But Tian Wei is tired of waiting, and wants her commitment. In his way is Rui Fan, who also wants to get back with An Zhen.
This make for movie TV drama is strictly for the fans of the series. Mike did not catch the TV drama but had no problem following the simple story line, which he wondered, did it really need 20+ episodes to tell? He also felt the movie looks like a TV production.
(SPOILER AHEAD!! STOP READING IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING.)
It’s four years later but An Zhen looks younger than four years ago. She looks quite unbelievable to be a mother of 9-year-old Momo, with her very thin and tall statuesque build. Her preference for light flowy dresses, skinny jeans and very high heels makes her look like she is doing the catwalk in the movie rather than acting. In the last scene where she pursues Tian Wei to Guam, mistaken that he is getting married, looks ridiculous as she races to the airport in a long billowing orange gown.
In contrast, the short scene where Wei Ern appears, the third-party who broke up An Zhen marriage, was touching. As a single mother of a 3-year-old boy, her strength shines through her vulnerability as she tells An Zhen, it’s not hard being a single mother at all.
I had predicted (or hope) that An Zhen would return to Rui Fan, but the predictable ending was nevertheless surprising, considering how the kind-hearted An Zhen would intentionally step into a wedding hall to break up another woman’s happiness, albeit erroneously.
If you had followed the series until the end, you cannot not watch the movie, if only for nostalgia sake.
