We got this accommodation ‘free’ from a company that was in the papers last week for being warned by CASE. And yes, we had attended the 90 mins presentation ‘sponsored’ by Citibank card members and were wowed by the resorts but not enough to purchase the membership.
Marriot Mai Kao is situated about 20 mins away from Phuket airport. That makes it 60 mins away from Phuket town and 60 mins away from Patong Beach. Without a car, the taxi ride would cost you 700 Baht and 800 Baht respectively. We were lucky we had a host who drove us everywhere. Although touted as located at Mai Kao beach, it’s not a next to the beach. In fact, you can’t see the beach from the hotel. You need to walk about 15 mins to reach the beach.
When we were there in June 2010, it was monsoon season
, the waves were huge and the warning flag was red – no swimming. Nevertheless, on a nice day, one should be able to view sunset from Mai Kao. Mai Kao is also a landing area for the leatherback turtles, although there has not been any sighting this year.
Because the taxi fare is so expensive, if you are not leaving the resort, you can either eat at the hotel or at the Turtle village (small shopping mall) next door. Either way, you get disappointing food and high price. Ditto for spa. (3000+ Baht at the hotel for 60 mins massage.)
The Marriot Mai Kao has 6 storey blocks with 2 bedroom apartments, with the ground floor units having their own swimming pool (No jacuzzi). We were impressed by the furnishings. There were LCD flat screen and DVD players in every room. Too bad I didn’t bring my Korean drama DVDs. They even had a washing machine and dryer, so before we left, I made sure I washed and ironed all our laundry.
I say the resort can match that of Banyan Tree. It’s a nice place for honeymoon or quiet time. Aaron could have spent the whole time cooped up in his aircon room watching soccer. (Actually, I have more channels on my home cable then the hotel.) I was very ‘on’, waking up early every morning to take part in the exercise programs. During that week, I tried aquarobics, Tai Chi, Yoga, body stretches etc. The exercises were easy and i welcomed the opportunity to lose some calories after all that binging of Thai food.
