After I attended 《重逢8》concert, I fell in love with 苏心荃‘s voice. When I learned from the Chinese newspapers that he is singing in the above concert, I decided to drive to Bukit Merah CC to buy the tickets. At $28, it’s cheap. Still, as a habit of mine, I asked if Passion members get any discount. The man who was incharge annoyingly brushed my questions aside, it’s for charity. No discount.
I persisted, which charity?
He got impatient. For the CC.
hmm… why would CCs need to raise funds?
Anyway, other than the ticket sales, the Radin Mas CC managed to raise more than $100K for their activities through sponsors such as Sakae Sushi and TCR Music. How did I know, before the concert started, all the sponsors were presented with tokens of appreciation by the MP.
In the program booklet, it was stated that there would be four performances, starting with 苏心荃 . The MC for the night is Lim Ru Ping 林茹萍, who did a great job adding comic relief to the otherwise sluggish concert. The audience were not the Esplanade concert goers I was used to. For a short 2-hr concert, I was annoyed by the many people moving about the theatre. Phones rang, people talked on their handphones, and this Ah Pei behind me coughed out his phlegm in the middle of the performance. (Am I becoming a snob?)
It was disappointing that 苏心荃 sang only two songs, for I bought the tickets just for him. In the interview with Lim, he revealed that he was the first runner-up for the 1991 Telantime, which was also the last Talentime Mediacorp organized. After that, he met 弹唱人, Cai Yiren and performed nightly at his gig. He apologised for fumbling with the first song, as he had a full day at the hospital and was also recovering from a flu. Isn’t it admirable of him to still contribute to this concert after working so hard attending to his patients?
The next performance was a short dance item by the Nanyang Chinese Dance Alumni. After that, it was 殷正洋’s turn to sing. He sang many Hokkien and Mandarin songs, among them one song from his father’s era – 绿岛小夜曲. This was the first song Mike sang me on our dates 20+ years ago. 殷正洋 preceeded his songs with detailed descriptions of the writer, singer and content of the songs. The problem was he spoke very slowly and we tend to drift away after a while.
The highlight of the evening was 蔡幸娟. She was prettier than I remembered, dressed in a shimmering short dress showing off her slim figure. Although she had recorded 50 albums and more than 500 songs, she dedicated the night to Theresa Teng on her 15th death anniversary by singing all Theresa’s songs, including a few ad hoc requests from the floor.
The concert ended promptly at 9.30am with the appearence of all the performers for a photo shoot with the MP. I was sooo close to rushing up on stage to get a photo with 苏心荃, while all the other aunties were rushing for 殷正洋, but I refrained and am now regretting it.
