When I first saw the sold-out play in 2007, I fell in love with it and couldn’t wait for 2009 for the encore production. I like most of 梁文福’s songs and the musical managed to incorporate his songs very well into the play. In 2007, i went with Mike and the two older boys. They were not very impressed and I had nobody to gush the musical to. I knew exactly whom I’m going to invite to watch the show together in 2009.
The tickets went on sale on 1 Jan 2009 and I immediately logged into SISTIC to purchase 7 tickets. When another friend contacted me to watch the show two days later, she was surprised to learn that I had already bought the tickets.
So on Sat, after a very exhausting morning helping out at the CTSS carnival, i went down to Drama Centre. Among the six friends, three were new to musicals and had never watched one before. I knew my good friend and ex-customer, Ms Teh, a Malaysian, that even if she was not familiar with 梁文福, would enjoy it. She assured me that she knows about him. I was very amused though, when half way through, she told me that the songs were all recorded. I pointed out to her the mics (quite visible) on the actors’ heads, and also pointed to her the live orchestra below the stage. That was how well all the singers sang on the show.
The reason for the great show, was the performance by the main leads, George Chan田伟鸿 and Joanna Dong. They were in the 2007 cast too. I thought the singing by Project Superstar runner-up Sing Chew 石欣卉 was off pitched and not suitable for stage.
But back to George Chan’s performance. He played Ah Le so well that I’m sure all the ladies in the audience were swooned by his voice. He was a natural on stage and made Ah Le very likeable. Having played in major productions at Broadway and now as a lead back home, this musical must have striked a chord with him, since the play revolved around Singaporeans/Asians who went off to Broadway to try to make a name in the music scene there, many without much success. George Chan would be considered the more successful one then.
After the play, the leads appeared to sign autographs for those who have bought the CDs. I took Peck Hoon’s CD to have them sign it, but did not managed to speak to George as I was among the last few and they were rushing off, sigh… I wonder if he has a fan club?
